BC Ferries Introduces “Surcharge Admin” Surcharge

Ferries | 4 comments

NANAIMO — Travellers on BC Ferries routes on Vancouver Island will be paying more starting today, after the corporation introduced a new “surcharge-administration surcharge.”

The new fee is being added to help rising costs in managing the fuel surcharge. There are also three new pricing tiers.

“Look, there are a lot of costs in putting a fuel surcharge in place,” said Dave (no last name), the corporation’s new CEO. When pressed by The Beacon to detail some of those costs, Dave said “We have to add it to our web site. And things.”

This fee will be in addition to the higher fuel surcharges introduced today.

New Cost-Per-Wheel Pricing

In a peculiar change to its pricing model, the new surcharge-surcharge will add $4.20 to the cost of every wheel on a vehicle. This will add $16.80 to the cost of a crossing in a four-wheeled vehicle.

“Wheels are the real problem,” said Dave. “If there weren’t any wheels on cars, there would be no need for fuel. We think this is a fair policy.”

BC Ferries confirms that wheelchair users will also pay for their two additional wheels.

Three New Pricing Tiers

In addition, effective today, BC Ferries has introduced three more pricing tiers, in an effort to “simplify” options.

The tiers include special discussion sailings for anti-vaxxers, a way to pay after the sailing, and the long-requested area for swinging couples. The last option was put in place after a disappointing swinging season for Nanaimo couples.
