NANAIMO — An online petition appears to have changed the minds of City planners in their plan to rename Nanaimo parks to all start with ‘B’ and have two syllables.

The original plan, exclusively reported by The Beacon, would have seen city parks be given names like Bylan, Bowum, and Bebit.

Public reaction was swift and harsh. “I’ve lived here 22 years and I still get Bowen and Beban Parks confused. This is a terrible idea,” said one Facebook commenter.

Now, city planners say they will drop the renaming plan, and switch to a new “easy to remember” park numbering system.

Under the new scheme, which starts September 1, park signs will be removed and replaced by signs with park numbers.

The city has put a list of the new park numbers on its web site, “for easy reference.”
